Why we must Fill the Gap
Our state is facing a transportation crisis. It is projected that
over the next 25 years, North Carolina will require $122 billion in funding
to meet transportation needs, yet there will only be $57 billion available.
That’s a $65 billion shortfall. Our state’s population
is growing and each of us is driving more miles. Given available
funding, we cannot meet the maintenance needs nor will we be able
to afford new transportation projects. The result: more congestion,
higher transportation and shipping costs, and a decreased quality
of life for those in need of efficient and safe transportation.
If we want to continue to attract industry, business and the brightest
minds to our state, a major incentive is a top-notch transportation
system. Efficient transportation options fuel economic development
and growth, but without proper funding that goal is impossible.
The NC Go! Plan: Fill the Gap
In April 2006, NC GO! announced its new strategy for dealing with
the pressing transportation funding needs in the state, offering
short term, intermediate and long term ideas to get transportation
funding back on track.
Fill the Gap is about more than roads and bridges. Our plan will
help meet the many needs laid out by the NC Department of Transportation
over the next 25 years, including maintenance and new projects for
mass transit, freight and passenger rail, bikes and pedestrians,
ferries and aviation.
