NC Go! Advocacy Efforts

For more than 20 years, NC GO has been seeking solutions that modernize how we fund transportation – and increase our state’s investment in transportation infrastructure. We’ve long known the gas tax – our largest source of transportation funding – is not sustainable. We need new, innovative, equitable and reliable funding that grows and adapts as our state changes.

NC GO has been at the leading edge of this effort for more than two decades. Working with organizations such as Carolinas AGC, ACEC, ACPA, the Metro Mayors Coalition, other groups represented by our board, and partner organizations like CAPA and the NC Chamber – we’ve made great strides since our inception in 2001.

With the help of our board, our members and partner organizations, since 2021 our work has helped:

  • Preserve the Gas Tax: Fight Capping the Motor Fuels Tax and transition to a Variable Tax impacted by Pop. Growth and the Consumer Price Index
  • End the Transfer from the Highway Trust Fund to the General Fund
  • Authorization for tolling and start of Turnpike Authority Projects
  • Adoption of STI (Data-based prioritization/decisions for transportation funding)
  • Creation of the Multimodal Fund
  • Creation of the Blue Ribbon “21st Century Transportation Committee”
  • Passage and creation of the Congestion Relief and Intermodal Transportation 21st Century Fund (authorization for 1/4 & ½ cent local option sale tax, to be used for transit)
  • Passage and creation of the Build NC Bond
  • Legislation and law to redirect Short-Term Lease Proceeds from the General Fund back to Transportation
  • Included in the adopted state budget - a phased transfer of sales tax collection to meet transportation needs (roughly equivalent to the annual sales tax collections on automotive-relate goods and services)
